Charlie is one of the most hard-working, dedicated, honest and dependable men I know. He puts 110% into everything he does – whether it’s work, coaching soccer or parenting…and it shows in the successes of his “teams” at work, on the field and at home. I’ve never seen someone who works as hard as Charlie. He’s always on time, rarely misses work, shows up early and stays late. He’s a natural leader, creative problem solver and always looking at the bigger picture. He shows his co-workers and employees respect and encouragement. He is a patient, yet disciplined and diligent coach, helping his soccer teams win many championships and tournaments. He is an amazing father to a son and daughter who are incredibly smart, talented, athletic, responsible, respectful and just all around great kids. He is a wonderful husband to my sister, Mary. They were high school sweethearts and once they met, they became the perfect pair, devoted to each other, inseparable…they are a shining example of a true love story. Charlie is always kind, helpful and generous to his friends, his family, his neighbors. We all know we can count on Charlie, that he’s got our backs, that he’s true to his word, that he stands up for what he believes in, that he fights for what is right. Bottom line, he’s one of the good guys.
There’s a lot more to Charlie than most people know. And that’s because he’s a humble, down-to-earth person. He’s not having to constantly post his status, toot his own horn, write a blog or shout from the mountain tops to get attention for anything he’s done. He just does what he does. And he does it well. For as long as I can remember (I’ve known him for well over 20 years), Charlie’s always been a consummate DIY-er: fixing things, designing and building, doing his own home improvement projects, refurbishing/up-cycling/transforming, etc…long before it was popular fodder for DIY blogs or home improvement shows. He’s more creative and artistic than he gives himself credit for…and he has a keen ability for finding practical and unique solutions for almost every problem.
Charlie is serious and focused when it comes to work and his responsibilities, but when he has the chance to let loose and have fun, he is the life of the party. He is goofy, hilarious, comical, and witty…so much fun to be around. He really has a great sense of humor and everyone has a great time when he’s in the room. Our kids adore him, but also have a healthy “fear” of their “Uncle Sarlee”…who they know will not hesitate to scoop them up and jump off “top shelf” with them into the swimming pool if they’re naughty. Boy, have I used “top shelf” as leverage on many occasions! He’s the cool, fun, playful Uncle…but he still commands their respect and obedience. Every kid should have an Uncle like Charlie. Everyone should have a friend, brother, brother-in-law, coach, boss, neighbor, like Charlie. And those of us that have Charlie in our lives…well, we’re the lucky ones and our worlds are all a little better for it.
Happy Birthday, Chuck! You are loved, admired, and appreciated by many. Thank you for all you do. I will have a Coors Light in your honor this weekend. 😉
