Sketch Every Day: 9.13.11 and 9.14.11

9.13.11: Colored pencil sketch of a Cardamom plant. My friend and next door neighbor, Darshini, makes the most delicious, rich and comforting chai tea, hands down! It’s like a warm hug for your tummy. Oh my goodness, when the divinely aromatic blend of steeped cardamom pods and freshly grated ginger, mixed with the special Ceylon tea (that Darshini’s mom sends to her from India), a splash of milk and a generous sprinkling of sugar…when all THAT reaches your belly: WHOA. It’s pretty much heaven in a teacup. She’s shown me how she makes it, several times at least. But it wouldn’t be the same as hers, so I don’t dare try. I’m perfectly content enjoying her expertise and it gives us a moment in our busy work schedules to sit down, chat and catch up with each other. So yesterday, when she popped over after work to say that she was coming over with a pot of homemade chai, my boys and I were ecstatic. My boys (4 and 7) are big fans of ginger and LOVE Darshini’s chai. It’s a very special treat for them.  As for the recipe?  I know she uses a lot of freshly grated ginger, whole cardamom pods, and her imported blend of tea from India…boiled together in a pot of water, adding milk until the color is just right, and then sometimes some fresh mint leaves from her garden. She doesn’t measure, but her feel for the proper combination is spot-on. After straining the ginger, loose tea leaves and cardamom pods, she serves the chai fantastically piping hot – she lets us add sugar to our liking. I like it sweet, but not too sugary – allowing the flavors of the spices to perfectly dance on my tongue like an exotic dessert. Ah, what a lovely way to end a long day, with a soothing chai hug for my belly. Thank you, Darshini!   9.14.11: I want to paint a De Gournay inspired wall some day. This is a quick watercolor sketch of the color scheme I’d like to portray. The October issue of House Beautiful arrived and a gorgeous dining room with De Gournay wallpaper was featured on the cover. All of the company’s hand-painted wall panels and fabrics with 18th century Chinoiserie and 19th century French designs are exquisite!  Seriously, how can a decorative painter not be inspired by the workmanship and artistry that is De Gournay? So, who’s going to let me try my hand at this? Or maybe I’ll use my master bath as practice…some...

I have pretty much the coolest mom-in-law EVER.  She’s amazing, intelligent, beautiful, thoughtful, kind…and she’s an incredibly good sport, open-minded, optimistic and willing to try new things.  I don’t know ANY Nanas that could keep up with her active lifestyle and her extensive repertoire of abilities!  Waterski and wakeboard: check. Skiing: check. Sailing: check. Ride a motorcycle: check. Fly an ultralight plane: check. Scuba dive: check. Whip up a gourmet meal: check.  Travel the world to chase trains and hike waterfalls: check. Dance to old school R&B and party it up at jazz festivals: check. Take care of two rambunctious boys (haha, just kidding John and Aaron), in addition to her two grandsons: check.  Seriously, the list goes on and on.  And most of these are things she’s been doing AFTER retiring from a long and successful executive career! I’ve been in awe of her since Aaron and I first started dating in 1992. She raised an incredible son to become the wonderful father and husband that he is.  And for that, I am truly grateful. I admire the natural grace and wisdom she possesses…and I look to her for guidance in so many aspects of life. When we have doubts or concerns about something, when we need professional advice, when there’s an issue that needs an objective and intelligent opinion…I always say, “let’s ask Mom about this.”  Her honest, yet non-judgemental point of view has helped us or brought us peace of mind in so many ways. And she’s always been a supportive confidant…I know she’s always got my back. Our boys adore their Nana…they share a truly strong bond and love for each other. So for today’s sketch, I chose to reference one of my favorite pictures of Mason and Isaac with their Nana…from a ski trip a couple of years ago.  Happy Birthday, Mom/Nana!  Wish we could be there today to celebrate with you.  We love you and can’t wait to see you soon!...
