Sketchbook

I sketch when I’m planning a project, developing a design, conveying an idea…but I also sketch when I’m inspired, to spark creativity, or just because I love to draw. Instead of a diary or a journal, I keep a sketchbook. I don’t always sketch on a daily basis (since completing my 365 project in 2011) but when I do, I’ll post a glimpse into my sketchbook here.

Instagram Photo A Day – December

When I finished my Sketch Every Day 365 project in 2011, I knew I wanted to remain in the habit of being creative on a daily basis, which is what I loved most about the challenge of making or doing something every day for a year. I saw that a few of my IGer friends were participating in a daily photo challenge and I thought it would be fun to get on board and try it out. After all, I’m on Instagram constantly each day…I’m sure I could find a minute or two to post a daily picture. No pressure..this is just something for fun, if I can keep up with the daily challenge, great…if not, no biggie. I’ve had a lot of fun and it has become my 365 project for 2012. I haven’t missed a day yet! Blogger, social media editor and Instagram star, Chantelle, of Fat Mum Slim, created the photo challenge and the lists that a lot of IGers I follow have been using for the challenge. I started in January. Here are February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November … and below is my Photo-A-Day collection for the final month of my participation in the challenge….December, 2012. And so this concludes my second 365 project! It was so much fun…so inspiring to see other IGers perspectives on the prompts and to share...

The Bedtime Routine – Continues…

The Bedtime Routine – Continues…

Last school year, my boys and I started a bedtime routine of a quick sketch before lights out. You can read about it and see some of the sketches here. Over the Summer break, my boys were less insistent that I sketch for them because they didn’t have a set bedtime, nor did they have to be up early for school the next day (which confirmed that this was simply a stalling technique). But sure enough, once school started up, so did the requests for a bedtime sketch. We started off with quick (under 15 minutes) sketches of their choice of toys or characters. But we were starting to run out of subjects and found that they were choosing the same types of toys. So, Mason (my smarty-pants 8 year-old) came up with the brilliant (and extremely challenging) idea that I should try to sketch/copy works by famous artists. We don’t do this each and every night, but I really enjoy these sketches in particular…since we are able to incorporate an introductory art lesson with the sketch. My boys learn a little bit about the artist and their style of art…and it’s a good review for me. The boys go through some of my art books and pick something for me to sketch. Keep in mind that I only have a few minutes. Our evenings leading up to bedtime are really packed (soccer or karate, homework, dinner, bath, reading, etc.). And I need them to get to bed, so I can get back to work (designing, printing, assembling, correspondence, invoices, etc.). Most sketches take about 5-10 minutes, nothing goes over 20 minutes. I sketch while the boys do their nightly reading (or while Daddy reads a chapter…we’re currently reading The Lost Hero together), and when they are done, I have a sketch finished to discuss (or wake up to in the morning). Our “Bedtime Routine” continues…and I will periodically update this gallery with our nightly quick sketches for the remainder of this school year (or until they lose interest again and stop making requests…I hope they don’t because I really love these moments with my family)....

Bedtime Routine

Bedtime Routine

When my son, Mason (age 7), suggested adding a sketch session to our bedtime routine, I was really flattered that my kids enjoy watching me draw and are interested in seeing how I start and finish a sketch. After getting ready for bed, putting on jammies, brushing teeth, a small drink of water, and going potty…we all climbed into their bed, with Mason’s sketchbook and a pencil/pen. Mason wanted to “challenge” me by selecting the subject for the sketch. And I wanted to impress him by showing that I was willing to try and sketch anything he put in front of me. We started with an Imperial Guard Star Wars action figure and went from there. Each night, Mason would remind me that I had to do our bedtime sketch and pick something for me to draw. Some nights I really had to rush the sketch…with all the end of the school year projects and activities I was working on, my wedding season schedule, painting jobs, and since it was usually getting late and these boys needed to go to sleep…I really couldn’t spend more than 15 minutes on each drawing. Most were done in about 5-10 minutes. Some nights, the boys would fall asleep before I finished the sketch, so I would surprise them in the morning with it and they thought that was cool. It was a fun bedtime routine for a few weeks and I certainly enjoyed it…but I started to get the feeling that this was actually a stalling technique so that they wouldn’t have to go to sleep right away. And sure enough, once school let out for summer and our bedtime routine became more “flexible”…I was no longer as entertaining as I thought, and the requests stopped. Or rather, they became more lackadaisical about it. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted…and at least I discovered that I can draw Halo action figures....

Vintage Comic Book Vibe

Vintage Comic Book Vibe

My brother-in-law, Mark, is an incredible designer, artist, musician. So, when he asks me to sketch or paint anything for any of his projects, I am completely honored and flattered for the opportunity to be a part of his awesomeness. For an upcoming event, Mark asked me to do some quick sketches of the three featured DJs for the flyer he was designing. Mark is one of the DJs, along with DJ Charlie Rock and Special Guest, DJ Nu-Mark. For the flyer design, he was going for a vintage comic book vibe. He sent me three photos to reference and told me to do the sketches like I had for my family’s birthday sketches…only with less shading and more cross-hatching like you’d see in comic book art.  I sketched first in pencil and then inked it, scanned and sent it to him…keeping my fingers crossed that he would like it and be able to work with it for the flyer. Mark took it from here, worked his magic on cleaning up the sketches and created this ridiculously AMAZING flyer. Seriously, I was blown away by what he did…and I was so humbled that he included me in the process. Not only am I super-duper excited that my little sketch made it to the final flyer design…I’m thrilled to go the event, with these three DJs, it’s sure to be a phenomenal show…not to be...
